Otraco wins national export award

Congratulations to the Otraco team who have won the Minerals and Energy category at the prestigious annual Australian Export Awards. Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, and the Minister for Trade and Investment, Andrew Robb, both attended the ceremony to congratulate the winners.

Starting with a single operation at Mt Whaleback Mine in Newman, WA in 1972, Otraco won its first international contract in 1994. Its overseas operation have now expanded to such an extent that the business employs 230 people at five sites in Chile, 300 people at eight sites in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia, and almost 300 people at 33 sites Australia and New Zealand.

Otraco’s services are linked to over one third of the world’s iron ore production, a fifth of all copper mines, 14 per cent of diamond mines and 12 per cent of platinum production. Its customer base includes most of the top ten mining companies in the world and some of the world’s largest mines 

To win this national award is exceptional achievement, especially as there are over 44,000 exporters in Australia. 

The judges favourably commented that innovation is at the heart of Otraco’s business plan and its marketing strategy. They also noted that Otraco understands the importance of engaging with local communities in all aspects of its business, which gives it a critical competitive advantage.
